Juneteenth Events in Los Angeles County 2024
In 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, true collective freedom was reached when 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas were free by executive decree. Nearly 200 years later, on June 17th, 2021, President Joe Biden made Juneteenth a Federal Holiday.
Every year on June 19th, Juneteenth, is celebrated to honor the liberation of African-Americans who were wrongfully enslaved in the United States. Juneteenth is a day dedicated to honoring our ancestors who fought for a new found freedom, and a foundation for us to keep building upon.
Juneteenth is meant for all communities to come together and commemorate the freedom of African-Americans, and Los Angeles is no stranger to taking part in the festivities. Check out your celebration options below!
