About the Event

Event Title:

Virtual Veve Art Workshop: Honoring African Spirituality and the Power of Resistance

Date and Time:

Friday, November 1, 2024

6:00 PM PST / 7:00 PM PST

Event Description:

Join us for a powerful and transformative virtual Veve art workshop in honor of African spirituality and the role it played in our ancestors’ fight to rebel, resist, and overcome colonial powers. Veves, sacred symbols used in African spiritual practices, are powerful representations of divine energies and ancestral connections. These symbols were not only spiritual tools but also symbols of resistance and empowerment during the struggle for freedom.

In this workshop, we will explore the cultural significance of Veves, how they were used by enslaved Africans in their spiritual practices to summon strength and protection, and how these symbols continue to inspire resilience and liberation today. You’ll learn how to draw your own Veve, incorporating intention and energy to manifest healing, strength, and resistance in your life.

Art Workshop:

This workshop is not a religious activity, and people from all belief systems are welcome to join. The focus is on the continued struggle of Black people worldwide for equality and freedom, as well as the empowerment that can be found in our African roots, culture, history, and art. We believe that through reconnecting with these symbols of strength, we can continue to find inspiration and power in the fight for justice and equality.

Remembering the legacy of our ancestors through art:

This workshop was thoughtfully developed during a time of year when many cultures honor those who have passed. Inspired by the spirit of Halloween, All Saints Day, Día de los Muertos, and other traditions that pay tribute to ancestors, we are focusing on how this season can empower us to reflect on the sacrifices made to preserve African culture, art, and life—elements that have historically faced efforts of erasure. It is a time to remember and celebrate the strength, resilience, and legacy of our ancestors, whose contributions continue to inspire us in the ongoing fight for freedom and equality.

Special Note:

Participants are encouraged to bring a photo, image, or item that represents the empowerment of African spirituality for them, their family, or their culture. You may also want to enhance your experience by lighting candles or creating a small altar to honor our ancestors during the workshop. These personal touches will help deepen your connection to the spiritual energy of this event and make it a more meaningful experience.

What to Expect:

• Introduction to the artistic and cultural elements of Veves and how they have been used in African spiritual practices

• Step-by-step Veve drawing tutorial

• Discussion on the use of spirituality in historical resistance movements

• Community sharing and reflection
