Untold Stories of Displaced African American Communities in Los Angeles
February 2025 | Los Angeles
Black in Mayberry invites you to We Are Here, an immersive exhibition that delves into the historical and ongoing displacement of African American communities in Los Angeles. This event honors the stories of resilience, creativity, and survival from families and communities uprooted throughout history. This exhibition brings to light the stories of resilience, creativity, and survival from families and communities uprooted throughout history and celebrates the enduring spirit of these communities.
Held in honor of Black History Month, We Are Here invites you to reflect, learn, and connect with the past to inspire a better future. Set within the broader historical context of the displacement of African people, from the transatlantic slave trade to the injustices faced today, We Are Here seeks to educate, inspire, and foster change.
About the Exhibition
The African American experience in Los Angeles has been shaped by triumph and tragedy, including the displacement of entire communities due to gentrification, urban development, and systemic racism. From vibrant neighborhoods like Central Avenue to the unjust loss of Bruce’s Beach, this exhibition amplifies voices silenced by history.
Through powerful artwork, personal stories, and multimedia installations, We Are Here honors the legacies of those who lived, thrived, and were displaced. It also serves as a call to action to preserve the cultural heritage and fight for equity in our cities.
Visitors can expect:
• Fine Art: Paintings, sculptures, and installations created by African American artists that explore themes of resilience, displacement, and freedom.
• Performing Arts: Dance, spoken word, and live music performances that bring stories to life in a deeply moving way.
• Interactive Workshops: Hands-on activities to connect with the exhibition’s themes on a personal level.
• Shared Stories: Accounts from displaced families and communities, shared through video, audio, and live storytelling sessions.
